That is really a great idea, if she can afford such a set-up or already has one. When I built my current computer I made sure to have a digital audio output on it so I could easily do precisely this, since my receiver had a digital audio input I wasn't using.
not really, no. I have no clue what sound card you have, for one, which could matter when hooking the PC into the receiver. Also the set-up I've got was ridiculously cheap because I bought off of Amazon with a gift card I got after trading in hundred of dollars in loose change, It's a Sony similar to one several friends had and I liked. Since I had so much found money, I didn't pay attention to price, or shop around.
I've got a set of these for my computer and they sound just dandy, as well as being pretty cheap for decent speakers. I've actually got an older set of Logitech's set up as a ghetto-surround sound on my TV, which works a lot better than it sounds like it would and is a hell of a lot cheaper and easier than doing a real surround sound setup. It really depends on how much you're willing to spend and how much you care about the top end of sound quality, once you're looking at 2.1 systems, things are going to sound good, it's just shades of grey in how much better they sound above that, at least, IMHO.
