New Opt-Out LiveJournal Feature

Feb 01, 2008 19:30

LJ has announced a new feature: the "Explore Area." Various public posts will be linked there.

The important part: you can Opt Out at the Viewing Options page, by clicking the box next to "Explore Area Exclusion." You cannot opt out for communities--instead, each individuals posts will be in or out based on their personal settings. Comms that ( Read more... )

This one made me think... knaveofhearts February 2 2008, 04:43:56 UTC
... how would I categorize what I've come to Livejournal to find, and yep, I would do it again the same way I already have -- with custom friends groups.

Explore Area is like the craploads-of-user-pics: features that undoubtedly appeal to someone, but are so distant from how I use the site as to be completely irrelevant to me.

ETA: This post was the top of my "Life" page. I wonder how that teenage girl's mom would feel if she knew that.

How her mom would feel if she knew her daughter's journal showed up at the top of a list like that.

God, I hate this. Now I have to explain why this isn't good to mods who will be divided.

It actually just ensured that i pass the comms on to people and stop doing them completely.

I wish that when you opted out, it didn't keep your posts on communities out of it. I am primarily friends only, but I have a couple open posts and didn't want them in this. However, I wouldn't mind having my community posts on there. Not that I am super interesting, but it makes me feel that other people will do this and then I might miss out on some good community posts that might lead me to a good community if I decide to use this.

Although, I really do think they should not be working on brand new stuff and should be fixing other stuff first. Every time there's a post about new stuff, a ton of people bring up things that are broken (and not just general grumbling, but actual broken things that they want to use and can't) in the comments. Instead of fixing those things, we get new stuff. That doesn't work very well.

According to the thread under the first page with marta, it does, and supposedly she edited the FAQ. I wonder which is true.

You know what's weird? I read the post and it had the bit about communities in it. Then, I opened the read comments link in a new tab so I could read the comments later and then I left to go to a concert. Apparently, between the time I first saw the post and the time I opened it in the new tab, the part about the communities was gone.

I honestly would have felt like I'd lost my mind had you not mentioned it was edited out.

Ah LurveZhunail, how I loathe thee. Let me count the ways...

On second thought, I don't have that much time, and LJ has a limit on how long a reply can be in the first place.

I'm peeved with myself that I went ahead and renewed my sub in order to give SUP the benefit of doubt and a chance to see if they were going to actually make real improvements.

However, it's just SS/DD around here. The only change is in which idjit is running the place.

I can see this potentially being a vehicle for making the currently optional ratings system mandatory. I post my stories publicly and many of them are R rated. I'll be opting out, but I predict it won't be long until someone's fic shows up on that page and there's another uproar.
