just wondering..

Ok people. I'm curious. This is a question that has arisen for me specifically in the last few weeks but i'm guessing everyone with a LJ has some sort of opinion on the matter. How "personal" do you feel an internet journal can be ( Read more... )

that's one extensive list!! but yeah, i totally agree with you, guess i think that this lj thing can be all of those things. though some of those options aren't really what i'd use it for, but that's the whole point i guess.
And i feel bad that i'm often a very erratic commenter- honestly it totally depends on how busy i am, what mood i'm in etc. Especially as i don't have full internet access at work and not gonna spend uni time on lj so i only really come on here when i'm at home. which is increasingly rare. hence the often random late-night postings!

I've been doing this for 3 years now and I use it for whatever I like. Sometimes I get some good feedback...other times not. I dicuss what I want because the people here are my friends or friends of friends. I don't have a 200 person friends list because hell...I don't know 200 people really. When I'm feeling cagey I make a filter of certain friends and then post so they can read it or just post friends only so no random troll can get to it. Communities are mostly troll laden so that can be a bit of a bother...but sometimes a cool mod takes care of a community and it can be pretty awesome.

thanks... I'm feeling a little better today, at least I'm back at work in any case. : )

I think your journal can be incredibly personal, whether or not you go completely friends only. I suspect that only a massive extrovert would go that way, however. I'm happy to put selective personal stuff on mine, because I know pretty much who's reading (to everyone else, I'm pretty much anonymous) and I don't really care (yet) if anyone wants to try and troll me.

People that know me will have probably realised that there is someone very close to me who rarely/never gets a mention. That's where I draw the line.

It's funny you mention "the line", i guess i've been thinking a bit about where i should be drawing it, especially now. More so, at what point does my need to write as a way to sort through shit in my head become outweighed by the potential harm it could do. Especially to a few people who may decide to read this who are pretty directly affected by things that are affecting me at the moment ( ... )

i think you're right. especially at the moment, you should probably err on the side of caution. Anything I wrote on the subject of the breakup I read and reread and eventually decided not to put online. looking back at it, I think it was the right thing to do, as a lot of it was me being pissed off and not making a lot of sense or whatever and would have been really stupid to post, or let other people read. I kept it anyway and some of it is quite funny to revisit, but mostly not.

I don't ever mention who I work for, where I work, where I live, phone numbers or email addresses which I think takes care of stalkers. And I agree with you, if someone wanted to stalk me, they need their fucking head read!

Don't sell yourself short, i'd TOTALLY stalk you!! I mean i'm almost halfway there with info i need.. all i need is to find out where you live. Oh, and develop an unhealthy obsession with your life i spose. meh. ;-)
