Who is the most paranoid about online info?

Hey gang, I could use your advice.

Last time I posted, I was on my way to a root canal. That went… as well as can be expected. The day took a severe downhill turn after that.

I, too, needed to keep in touch with some people so I went there. The first thing it did was send emails to everyone in my contacts list. So you might want to use a new email account that doesn't have one. I still get emails from them at my work address reminding me that I 'invited" me to join, so it's something to avoid so your friends don't want to kill you....

And don't join ANY of the "apps" or games, because that way lies destruction!Or so Val tells me. Otherwise, I haven't experienced any problems. Of course, I don't post anything my boss couldn't read....

It can't do that if you don't give fb your e-mail password.

Bit late on that advice... I'm already hooked on the treasure hunt game. I've been on fb what, six weeks? I'm on level seventy-something (less than 75). At least I don't have to pump quarters into it.

Val was right… that way lies madness.

I've refused it give it access to my email address book. So far, so good. Last time I got suckered by one of those, I thought I'd unchecked everybody, only to find out there was more than one page of names. Everybody past page 1 got the message. I was apologizing for weeks. *blush*

The big thing on fb is to become very familiar with the security settings. It's possible to lock down just about everything, so that nobody can see your info if you don't want them to (the except seems to be your friends list).

I've got all game notifications blocked, so I don't get a million obnoxious notifications. As mentioned above, don't give fb your non-fb passwords, and it will ask for them.

Then it's just a matter of being vigilant. I don't friend people unless I'm sure of their identity, I look at any pictures that I'm tagged in, so far I haven't needed to un-tag anything, but it's possible to do so.

The problem is, I've gotten really comfortable with the things LJ can do. For one thing, since it allows an alias, I can keep it separate from my business life. Also, you can set up groups of friends, so you can regulate exactly who can see what.

I am finding that people update fb a lot more often than blogs. Perhaps it's because only short posts are allowed, so there's less pressure to be witty and eloquent?

I think part of the updating is that it's actually less personal, so folks send out two or three sentence stream of conciousness updates without considering that those are going to be around for a while, because quite honestly, they don't feel as permanent. My f-book page has hundreds of unread entries, even if I check it on two consecutive days, which happens once in a blue moon. I think my status still says I'm watching the Olympics, in fact. Oops. And unlike LJ, I don't use it as a diary because I can share that with strangers I met on the internet, who share my interests, but have no interest in doing the same with the more random people who happened to go to school in my hometown. I can seek out people on LJ who say interesting things. Half my Facebook is more like ghosts lurching out of my past, with little or no relevance to who or what I am now. And family members ( ... )

Ravelry! I couldn't remember the name of it. Once I get all the yarn secured from the kitties (they especially LOVE "moonlight mohair" yarns to unravel) so I can get my office squared away, I'll have to see about cataloging my stash. On paper first, because it will be quicker, but then I'll have it all entered.

Of course, it will also have the good-news/bad-news effect of listing all of my unfinished projects. That might be a bit depressing. :P
