Historically all cartoon pens and pencils have moved standing up, balancing on their points. Interestingly pencils lean forward while pens lean backward.

Pens only move upright when the caps are off. I conscientiously keep all mine capped.

Would pens move in a slithery fashion like snakes? Or hump up and straighten out like caterpillars? Or would they just dart from place to place in a purposeful stiff straight line?

Probably depends on the type of pen. More expensive ballpoints would probably march around in a stiff military fashion, whereas stylish fountain pens would probably sashay a little more. And then you've got your old, chewed-up, leaky Bics straggling at the back whom no-one wants to make eye contact with cos they'll probably ask for spare change.

Can you tell it's my last day and I ran out of fuck to give a few days ago?
