Air conditioners in which the heat exchanger freezes solid are undercharged with refrigerant. Get the vehicled checked for an R-12 leak.

I'll have them look at that next checkup. I suspect that the AC may have simply been overworked. So far the only times we've had it ice up have been after long days driving nonstop through mountains in sweltering weather while carrying three people and all their luggage. The Fit has a 'low-emission' (that is, barely powerful enough) engine, and a 'high-efficiency' (tiny compressor and dense heat exchanger) air conditioner.
