I kind of love the Kinks but they also kind of annoy me.

I wonder is it certain albums or songs that get to you? Or is it the idea of the Kinks that you don't like?

Tell me this.

no, the idea of the kinks is exactly what i like the most! but i feel like a lot of times the kinks themselves fall short of the idea of the kinks.

i'll never write songs as well as ray davies, so i'll shut up now.

You can always aim for Dave Davies status. That's what I do.

I'll never be a Bowie, I'll never be an Eno
I'll only ever be a Gary Neuman

Ok, mister. You know what they mean to me. What is it that you don't like about them?

well, their "englishness" i guess. i wish they could let loose and rock like i know how they can all the time.

don't get me wrong. i love a lot of their stuff. but some of their lyrics get to me. they're too tidy of a story sometimes. that's just a personal thing and how i like to write/listen to songs.

"victoria" is one of my all time favorite songs. if i had a daughter today, she'd probably be named victoria.
for a few reasons unrelated to the kinks.

Well...they were a very camp band. They were all about pushing buttons by being effeminate...that was sort of their thing. Hence the name Kinks, and that's why they have so many suggestive or outright homoerotic songs. That's one of the things I love about them.

So a lot of the frilly, nancy music was very cutting edge when they were doing it. In fact, Dave still prances around the stage if you see him nowadays. Not Ray quite as much, though.

I don't know that's what I thought of when you said "Englishness" and "tidy". Maybe? But hey, you're great so I won't hate you.

that's not what i meant by those words at all. i don't know what i mean. sometimes they just don't do what i want them to do. as far as song structure and music.
