A lot of these may be duplicates of other people's comments, but here are some authors/books I enjoy. (Note: I'm avoiding paranormal stuff, like Charlaine Harris. Just so's you know. *g*)
Dick Francis Minette Walters Martin Cruz Smith Frances Fyfield PD James (up until the last few) Elizabeth George (so long as Lynley is a major presence, although not What Came Before He Shot Her - and read them in order) Charles Todd (read in order) Val McDermid (the Tony Hill books and A Place of Execution) Anne Perry (read each series in order) Ruth Rendell Berlin Noir (a 3-in-1 volume) by Phillip Kerr Johnny Under Ground by Patricia Moyes (her others are meh, but that one's fun
( ... )
Grrr. I don't know why the whole end of my comment is coming out in italics, because I checked, and there's nothing wrong with the coding that I can see. Oh well.
And I really enjoyed a series of books years ago about a detective who was converting to Judaism, but the author died, so that was the end of those, and now I can't remember her name and couldn't find it via searching bn.com. Hmph.
I am finally updating this list, and hmmm... did you check the 'Stop, You're Killing Me' site? You can search by Diversity/Location/Job - it's possible something might 'ping' for you there. I'm intrigued!
You should read Sherlock Holmes off course ;) And I don't know if this is in that category, but "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova is great too ;) And then it is "The Flying Dutchman" or also known as "The Ghostship" by Frederick Marryat. :)

And Iain Pears' "An Instance of the Fingerpost" is another favourite.
Also seconding Colin Dexter, though also not sure which one best to begin with.
Lindsay Davis would be prominent for ancient history mysteries. But I can't believe you wouldn't have read her already...
