Seatbelts

Nov 09, 2005 05:52

I Don’t like to wear seatbelts. They make me feel uncomfortable and I don’t think that they are as safe as every body lets on. Now Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying seatbelts haven’t saved lives and I’m not saying that you shouldn’t wear a seatbelt. It is the law and we all are good law abiding citizens right? But do you think that it should ( Read more... )

Dude, if you're going to report your stats, report all of them ( ... )

I never said that seatbelts didn't save lives. Bodygaurds save lives as well but I'm not required to have one. The reason I didn't include the other statistics is simple all of them lead to the bottom line. Wearing a seatbelt reduces your chances of fatalaty or serious injury 45-50%. Chances. People still die seatbelt or no. It's the risk we take by driving.

why a law? _jeremiad November 9 2005, 14:52:31 UTC
Because accident cleanup and medical care costs a hell of a lot of money. Money that could be saved if people wore their seatbelts.

The general public pays 75% of all crash costs, primarily through insurance premiums, taxes, delays, and lost productivity.

Motor vehicle crashes in 2000 cost 230.6 billion or $977,000 per fatality and $1.1 million per critical injury.

That's why it's a law. Because an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.

It's coming man. ZPG! Zero Population Growth! Then you end up like Christopher Lambert in Fortress! No one wants that, to be jailed and oppressed by Clarence Boddicker the warden! Heck No! Hurray for Robocop! He serves the public trust, protects the innocent AND upholds the law. He wears seatbelts cause if not, when you run over people covered in toxic waste, he might get dented! A dented Murphy is no good and has to sit and eat babyfood. He doesn't much like that. So you understand now? I think I have addressed both points in a fair and balanced way, as Rupert Murdoch would say. Remember, there is no fate but what we make for ourselves, the future is not set. Surely now you understand! Also, if you have a problem, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire, THE A-TEAM! No one else loves it more when a plan comes together. Except maybe F.L.A.G, but I haven't trusted the Foundation For Law and Government since Devon died. Sad eh?

I worked with Worcester EMS... the UMass Memorial branch of paramedics for the city. I was only with them for an internship period... something like 6 or 7 months, but even in that short period of time I saw enough accidents that you can be sure I'm never riding without a seatbelt again.
I'm not sure if your statistics also have numbers for non-fatal crashes. Not everybody dies... we picked up a fair number of people who weren't wearing seatbelts and "merely" lost a leg or two. People with massive head trauma from going through the windshield in a low speed colision who would probably live if things went well at the hospital, but who were looking at some time in a coma and probably extensive brain damage as well.
Should it be law? Well, ultimately as jeremiad stated that's a cost-saving measure. Sure you may not get ticketed when you get pulled over, but most of the time the officer just wants you to buckle up. They don't enjoy scraping bodies off the road more than anyone else.

Not when they're more concerned with what you've been drinking or what drugs you may have in the car and why that boy has his red baseball cap turned sideways and they never mention thing one about seatbelts. I'm sure many deaths have been prevented with the use of seatbelts but my point is that many have died even though they were wearing seatbelts. It's not a fool proof safety measure and therefore should not be law. But that's just my opinion.

So just because something isn't 100% full proof means we shouldn't use it at all?

My opinion has always been that almost nothing is 100% reliable!

We should have the option to use or not use those safety measures provided.
