So a couple of weeks ago I fell hard on my knees. It took a couple days to recover from the various pains involved, but I'm largely better, except ( Read more... )

There are a lot of parts to the knee and you are not a doctor. If you have given it rest and taken care of it for several weeks and it is not better I would see a doctor. An x-ray or MRI can help determine if something is wrong.

I have had a knee injury and what happened was the patella (I think that's the part) was rough and so it caused pain. I had a wonderful surgeon (he was the San Diego Soccer's surgeon) who used Arthroscopic surgery and I regained nearly all use of it.

If you don't want to use your insurance or don't have any check your school nurse if you have that care available and they may give you some things to try on your own for healing.

I'm so not getting another MRI for a bruise.

Oy.

Well, I have the resources, I just don't have a lot of time, and it doesn't seem that bad aside from how long it's been.

Knee injuries can take awhile to heal. I'd keep an eye on it and if it doesn't seem like it's resolved within another week I'd prolly get it checked out by a professional. The thing with bone chips and torn stuff (if that is the problem) is that if not treated soon and correctly, the tear can get worse or the ragged bits can damage other stuff. Bruising just needs time where tears or chips may require other interventions. And without an evaluation of some sort, you don't really have a way of knowing what it is. *hugs* and I hope you feel better soon!

Right.

Do you know if an XRay is enough to find bruises? I'm really not up for an MRI over this.

If they want to check out the tissue damage, they'd need to do an MRI. If they want to check out that bones didn't rearrange, they'll use the X-ray.

With knee injuries, the key is seeing a doctor sooner than later as the wait and see approach can make your situation worse. Please see someone now since you have already waited a couple of weeks.

Well, whatever else may be true, it's definitely getting better, not worse.

I was primarily concerned with how long it was taking, not with the direction of progress, if that makes sense.

But yes, you've all been very vehement, so I will drop into the Cupertino Clinic as soon as I'm able, possibly after class today.

I am sorry to hear that you are still in pain, legs can feel sore a few weeks. I have also noticed on myself that It hurts more when I fell the heavier I get. Getting it checked out if you are suspecting some damage is never a wrong. Hopefully the ache is gone soon. *Hugs*

I realize I'm late to the party here - my vote is that if it's still improving I'd leave it alone unless you're still getting sharp pains. The reality is, yes you're still young but you *are* over 30, and things change after that.

When I bruised a rib playing indoor soccer it hurt for at least a month - I remember calling Howie one or two weeks after the initial injury and he was like, yup, welcome to being an adult, these things take time. Alas you don't have him as a resource but unless you're immobilized, getting sharp pains or swelling still or it's getting worse, I think it's just that it takes a lot longer.

'Course you now have to factor in that I was raised with Mom's paranoia and I've also rebelled against it, so where am I on the scale of sane people you listen to for medical advice? :)

*laughs* Well, you're saying about what I'd been thinking, honestly, and I didn't rebel per se.

I was trying to get info on whether knees take a while (or 30 year old bodies, I suppose), and the answer is clearly yes. It does feel like it's getting better, just really slowly.

That said, the nearly unanimous input is that knees are tricky and one should just go ahead and get 'em checked if they have the insurance to cover it.

So... pending the time to do so, given that I'm in midterms, I intend to see what I can do about that.
