why you're using windows as a development environment is beyond me. you should've just done step 0 and installed linux.

We're just starting to get some Macs here again...that's hard enough to swing. The folks that hold the purse-strings won't let people get Linux. Windows-heavy organizations tend to stay Windows.

If Art's talking XP here (the SP3 mention leads me to believe he is), then yes Mr. Gates had a hand in it...although I think all the layers of management at Microsoft had more to do with it. Whatever the case, he retired after Vista came out.
