The vermouth makes it smoother, which makes it a sippable drink for people who can't manage vodka/gin neat. Also, because it's entirely alcoholic with no 'filler' ingredients, it's a more expensive drink, and thus came to be thought of as a 'high class' cocktail.
I have no issues with drinking vodka any way you want to give it, except with salt and grapefruit juice. Ugh.
But I guess my plebeian genes are showing again as I just don't see it as that big a deal. I would rather just have it in a shot glass. Martini glasses are dumb.
