Lay my head down [Emma's Room - New Enterprise, John, Emma, and Others]

Dec 05, 2009 14:24

Em sighed as she let herself into her room. She slowly walked to the bathroom to wash her face and change into a grey tank top and pajama pants. Finally, she sat on the bed and pulled out her trusty datapadd to update her livejournal with a short Christmas wishlist. She frowned. She hadn't seen John in a while so she quickly wrote out a message.

It was more then a little surprise to get the message from Bones about his mother. The whole way down to sickbay, Kirk was puzzling it. Emma had just... appeared on the shuttle in. Where could she have gotten sleeping pills that Bones of all people didn't know about?

He rubbed a hand over his face and entered sickbay, looking around until he spotted--

John? He blinked. John and Bones, almost duplicates of each other minus the clothing, sat side by side leaning against each other. Kirk hesitated, not really sure what it meant, or what was going on.

It hadn't been more than an hour or so since all this had gone down, but Bones felt (and looked) as if he'd been hit by a shuttle. He saw Kirk enter the private area where Emma had been set up, and despite the feeling of confusion and helplessness, he felt better, just seeing Kirk there.

"Hey," he offered weakly, nodding at Kirk to take the empty chair on the other side of him.

Kirk walked over to Bones, sitting down. "He you." He said softly, nodding once to John, "Any news?"

Bones shook his head. Henderson had labs done again, same result. "A lot of medication in her blood, and some of it pretty strong."

Kirk had heard Bones grumbling about his mother being drunk when he'd returned back to their rooms the previous night after she'd asked him for something for her head when she was drunk. "Looks like she took some sleeping meds last night after I dropped her off. That, plus what I gave her and the alcohol in her system..."

Bones shrugged, going pale again. It had been bad enough seeing his dad hooked up to machines, dying. Seeing his mother laying there brought back a whole new set of bad memories that he'd thought he'd pushed back, deep down inside him.

"I don't think she was tryin' to kill herself," he said in a low tone, voicing a fear he'd had inside him since he saw her laying there. "I think hope it was all an accident."

"It doesn't make any sense." Kirk frowned, remember giving Bones one hell of a healing blowjob after Bones had returned grumpy from dealing with his mother. "How the hell did she get sleeping shit if you didn't give it to her?"

"I don't know," Bones said tightly. It didn't look well on his medical staff if people were out there with illegally obtained medication. It didn't look good at all.

"But I'm going to fucking find out."

John frowned, trying to process all the information he was hearing without jumping between the two men. If what Bones was saying was true, and John was sure it had to be, then Emma....

He squeezed his eyes shut, running a hand through his hair. "I... I can't believe it. I mean, she didn't even tell you she needed help sleeping? Shit." He slapped his palm down on his thigh, grasping at fabric for some sort of anchor.

"I wish I hadn't.... I wish I hadn't been so weak. Maybe then she would have felt comfortable telling me."

He wanted to scream, wanted to break something, someone, run, jump, rip things to shreds. His hand shook and his fist curled tighter in the cloth of his pants.

"Dammit."

Kirk looked between Bones and John, his eyes dark. "You two stay." They weren't in any fucking condition to deal with this. "Who's in charge of the meds around here? Could someone have brought them from off-ship? Can you get records of anyone who was using them previous to being on the ship and could have given them to her?"

There was only so many ways someone could have gotten Emma those pills she shouldn't have had.

"Anytime medication is dispensed, a notation is made to the pharmaceutical records," Bones told him automatically, eyes still in his mother's comatose form. "Keeps inventory straight. You take out medication, you have to notate where its going, or who its going to."

Turning his head slow to Kirk, he sighed, his shoulders relaxing a fraction. Truth be told, he shouldn't be involved in an investigation of his medical staff - fuck, he'd probably be investigated as well. "It would be almost impossible to tell if someone brought them on board if they came in a shuttle, they could carry anything with them. It's not a heavy narcotic, that hydronol, but it's not just thrown around. It's serious sedation for people with real insomnia problems."

Kirk rubbed his brow as he thought. He had to be a part of this... he was Captain. "Alright." He stood up. "I'm going to go talk to med's inventory and get them to find anyone who's come on board that had it as a prescription anytime in the last few years."

"I'll be back."

John watched as Kirk walked away, walking with an air of purpose. But he turned back to Bones after a second, realizing what this meant.

"Doc... Are you gonna be okay? I mean, the entire medical staff is going to be under investigation and, forgive me if I'm wrong, but you seem to be the head of said medical staff." John grimaced as the harsh words flowed out of his mouth. Too much time in the military hadn't left him with the best social skills.

"What I mean to say is are you... Do you need me? I mean, Doc.... Leonard. Do you want privacy, or some companionship? 'Cause I'm worried about Em... but she's your mother. You've got priority. You say leave and I'm gone. Just, I need some guidance. Never was the best at reading people." John snorted and motioned to the inches of space between their skin. "Well, you might be different. But that's another story for another time."

Watching Kirk head off, Bones took a breath and let him go, turning his attention to John's words. "I wouldn't mind the company," Bones told him quietly, "if you don't mind me not talking."

Nodding, John pulled back from Bones, fidgeting in his chair until he was comfortable. He could do that. In fact, he was probably a lot more helpful as a solid presence than he was as anything else.

John sighed, trying not to let his imagination run away with him when it came to Emma's condition. He just had to believe she would be fine. That was all he could do.
