I got on facebook the other day and in that list that tells you more than you would ever care to know about people's facebook activites, i saw that a friend of mine joined a group against the movie The Golden Compass. It was a christian group, of course. I guess the author is an athiest and in the final book of the series, the kids end up killing ( Read more... )

Amen!

Awesome post, Emily!!!!!!!999999

"but its ok because Jesus saved us..."

Travis, Marlucio, and I were just discussing this phrase. And how you probably meant it sarcastically...but the way your post flows this line could be taken sarcastically and/or truthfully (altogether truthfully...but you know what I mean).

Travis said, "Isn't it funny how the thing that is the most beautiful aspect of christianity (being saved by Jesus) is also the most offensive."

And I added that it is disgusting how we sometimes make it the biggest crutch in aiding our own selfish desires.

Anyway, this isn't the first movie that has "anti-God" themes. There are very few that DO. No, I take that back. Everything points to God. I'm sure there is a Travis-lesson just WAITING to be taught after viewing this movie.

Plus, it has Nicole Kidman and it is fantasy-so, it'll be fun. :)

I meant it to sound both ways, but i did meant it more sarcastically, cause it can either be a crutch and an excuse, or our hope in humility ( ... )

Be careful, I know how easy it is to criticize the church and yes, the church needs it, but I think that more times what the church really needs is prayer. I can point out what my christian brother is doing wrong, but how many times do i sit in the pew and critique it? How many times do I just ask God to change hearts? I don't mean to bark at you, but prayer is the best thing we can do about this kind of stuff.
Grace and Peace be upon you.

My critique is not without prayer, and it is not excluding myself. Its a thought of mine written down for those close to me to read, not a rant for the entire church to read. It is something I care alot about and something that I simotaneously struggle with myself.

The Golden Compass part of your post oythegreat December 3 2007, 01:19:09 UTC
I want to see the movie. I wanted to read the books before. My sister stubbled onto them on accident. They were billed as "a new adventure greater than Harry Potter!" or whatever. So she read them and was suprised by the ending.

I take issue more with the books than the movies, because they were marketed toward kids, and according to my sister, there were some very non-kid-friendly events in the book. The movie, at least, is PG-13.

But, yeah, Christians spend a lot of time being defensive about Christianity. Are we so weak that we can't be challenged? I think this movie will be thought-provoking and discussion-worthy. It may even suck. But it's worth a shot.

By the way, if you watch it, you're going to hell.

Just a thought.

It seems odd that we DO spend, no.... WASTE, so much time banning things, and condemning....now that's following Jesus huh?!?! So, Emily would you like to go see the movie with me and Rebekah, maybe we could go as FNG or something, let me know what you think. i'm not sure mr. annonymous pants got your point but then maybe i missed it too.
And now that i think about it (yikes), sin is an attempt at killing God, push him out of the picture....oh i don't know, i got nothing. I don't know how the books end, so i am really not posting to beat against the book. peace out....er yep.

I am going with katlyn to see it when exams are over, but I can always go see it again if FNG goes. I mean, if its really good and we can make a discussion out of it or something that would be neat. I cant wait to see how it is!

i read an article in newsweek about this movie, and how the author meant it to be against the corruption that occurs in organized religion, specifically the catholic church. so i don't really find it offensive because, well, there is lots of corruption, sin corrupts people. i completely agrre with you, emily, about the guarded thing. i think that christians today get so caught up in the fact that people are attacking our religion, that it's stupid. i don't know, i'm not making much sense. so what if this guy hates christianity. a lot of people do, and it's not the religiosity of it that matters anyway. i hate the corruption in organized religion too. oh, and mr. anonymous, i think you missed the point too.
