They're a visual representation of the cliques that form around everyone. It uses the number of mutual friendings to divide everyone on your friends list up into tiers, so the people who are only friended by Tish here are going to be at the edges, while people who are members of a heavily interconnected circle of friends that includes Tish will be close together near the middle. Position also plays a role - jenni_the_odd, for instance, is close to her family and friends, since they have all friended each other, while I'm nearby (having friended Jenni) but separated into my own clique consisting of kiskia and n3m3sis42 and in smaller font, since my only connections to Jenni's clique is through her and Tish.
