Is this your first prose this year? You should write more. Your skills as a poet were evident -- it was so rich! Great work.

I played the french horn back in my school days, and one of my brothers was a drum major (though he was 5 years older than me and went to a different school), so I can relate to some of this, but I managed to skip having to deal with marching band... I was in 6 different concert choirs, though! Fortunately, vocal performance conditions were not nearly as challenging, weather-wise (though there were some heated moments in the wings of our musical theater on more than one occasion!) ;-)

I also did not expect prose from you, and had to double-check I was reading the right thing! But this could almost be poetry in the way that it's written - it's so evocative and beautiful, and I love the ending and how he finally has a place. It's lovely!
