I remember that conversation we had about ‘feeling’ God. I can remember the envy I felt towards those who could feel his presence and a growing sense of self-hatred for myself because I couldn’t. During my brief (and I do mean brief) reawaking as a Christian, I looked to God for comfort and company, but all I felt was loneliness. I’ve stated that there are a myriad of reasons why one could forsake God: science, philosophy, historical reasons; however, in the end the truth of the matter is that I don’t believe in God because I was unhappy and more than anything else I wanted it: happiness. I was weak, so I gave up, not just on God, but on everything. I created a fake self to project onto the world, an artifice that was made whole by the thoughts of others. I ran away. It was like death, that cold grip on my heart squeezed until it burst and it ended. I was lucky, it happened when I was young and the full social and parental binders were in effect.
