Ren bugs me too, though a whole lot of other things about NANA bug me anyway. I do hate how popular the pairing is when it's so incredibly obvious they're detrimental towards each other. Same thing with Takumi/Hachi, but for other reasons. I just hate the co-dependency in one and the one-sidedness/marriage-of-convenience of the other.. but so much of NANA is basically like a "What NOT to do in a relationship" manual anyway. The misaimed fandom is probably my biggest pet peeve.

That's exactly it though. Exactly. I have a hard time thinking of a canon relationship from that series that is actually somewhat healthy, and yet you've got diehard shippers for almost all of them. And the Ren/Nana "DIE TOGETHER/possession is romantic/mutually destructive relationship addiction is TRUE LOVE" fandom makes me headdesk. Destructive love is not romantic. Why are they popular? *flails*
Yeah, Hachi's marriage of convenience bugged me a lot, especially since it seemed like it stunted any growth that Hachi was experiencing with Nobu, as far as learning to want to take care of someone besides herself x3 But at least it doesn't seem to continue in the future.

It's true.. I can't really think of a single canon relationship in that series that's decent. I mean Nobu/Hachi was great for like the two chapters it existed in, but who knows how Yazawa would've managed to screw that one up without Takumi's help. At least in her earlier series she had some healthy couples? Paradise Kiss did end with the female lead marrying the stable guy as opposed to the jerkass, and before that Gokinjo Monogatari ended with the two childhood friends getting together. Maybe with NANA she just wanted to see how dysfunctional she could make everything.
