Average Gasoline Price Nears 1981 Record

The average price of gasoline hit $3.218 a gallon Monday, up a stunning 11.5 cents the past week and just half a penny shy of the inflation-adjusted record, the government reported.

As of yesterday, Michigan's average gas price was an ungodly $3.42, near the top in the country. Jim filled up his little car yesterday for $50. I almost had a heart attack when he told me.

I am seriously considering getting a bike and taking that to work three days a week. The other two I come in from Jim's and would take three hours to get in.

It varies around the Chicago region, pretty much anywhere from $3.70 to $4.20 from what I understand. I think they said on the news that Chicago now has the highest gas prices in the nation. Oh yeah, $50 in gas is quite easy to do these days.

It's interesting that gas prices always seem to peak just in time for major driving weekends - like Memorial Day.

They said on the radio this morning that the prices go up because of the futures market which goes up around the holidays based on demand.
