I Couldn't Think of Anywhere Else to Post This...

Recently I have come across this list of "Ten Questions to Ask Your Biology Teacher". It's being distributed by creationists (mostly in the US), and even though professional biologists have refuted these claims (http://pharyngula.org/ ( Read more... )

Dude, that ROCKS. (I am so academic today! Fear my mad vocabulary skills.) I especially love the "personal worldview" part -- the glasses analogy is perfect for this debate. Also, I find it extremely amusing that these creationists even bothered to come up with these lame questions. Nice try, n00bs.

Thank you. :)\

And yeah, I'm glad you like my personal view. The thought-experiment of the 2D men looking at a 3D object is not my own (as I gave credit for, to Daniel Gildenlow), but the analogy of certain men seeing the object BETTER than the others is my own.

The terrible thing is that MANY people feel the creationists arguments to be pursuasive, simply because evolution, natural selection, and the origin of life are not well understood by laypeople. The other aspect is that creationists rarely use original research to prove their points. They tend to use the bible, in conjunction with bad science and/or quotes from scientists taken out of context to prove what they say. This is simply bad science, and the "explosion" of this into the media and popular culture is simply a product of the increase in influence of the Religious Right in the US.

I didn't respond to this post right away because I wanted to mull it over for a while, and secondly, I wanted to make sure my thoughts weren't impaired by alcohol ( ... )

So it sounds to me like you're in favour of the Intelligent Design theory, which is cool, because I can buy that as well; the creation of the universe as a whole is pretty hard to explain via science. I just don't think the creator is like any given religion says ( ... )

That's also why science presupposes that creation is wrong - it's not because they're dogmatic or hostile towards religion, it is simply because IT CANNOT allow it. You simply cannot invoke supernatural forces into science as a manner of explaining something, because it can't be tested. IF it can't be tested, then we can't provide evidence for it's existence, and therefore it can't be part of science. Science is empirical, like it or not, and so science can't test things that can't be tested ( ... )

Your letter to the Herald offenso December 29 2005, 05:59:03 UTC
I read your letter in the newspaper. It kicked ass. You are much more articulate than many people (such as me at the moment), and I'm glad you are using it to spread enlightenment.

Kudos, keep up the good work,
Offenso

P.S. If you're wondering how in the blazes I know how you are, I remember you from Scarlett!

Thanks!

Actually, my letter to them was edited quite a bit (the actual letter was around 500 words long) but they (to my great suprise) edited it very well and kept intact everything I wanted to say; I was happy that they printed it, and I hope some people at least got the message.

Thank you for your kind words; I appreciate it.

Yeah, I was wondering how you knew who I was, but it makes sense that you know me from Scarlett. But my next question - How did you find my livejournal? And who are YOU? ;)

Thanks again.

That school function that the LJ staff established led me to this. A friend of mine and I would look through the school directories looking for folks we knew (kind of lame - and creepy, I suppose), and while he found one of his old friends, you were the only guy I recognized. I won't say my (real) name here, but I was in grade 11 last year, a tall guy, big hair, monotone voice. I don't think we had any classes together.

Have a nice day, and good luck with University (I guess your finals ended a few weeks back),

Haha - it's not lame or creepy, I did the same thing.

You sound somewhat familiar but I can't be sure.

How did you know me, though? From my work in the Fever?

Thanks! (and yes, they did. They went well)

I think anyone pitting faith versus science are wasting their time, and that members of both sides of that non-debate are engaging in a silly exercise.

They do not understand nor differentiate the role of science from that of faith (I do not use the word "religion" because simple religion is not faith).
