Dream: Rattlesnakes

It's been a long time since I had a dream that made me yell and wake myself up. This one was short; basically there were rattle snakes everywhere, one actually jumped at my face like in a bad movie, I threw my left arm out and yelled, then woke up. It turns out I just hit one cat with my arm and scared the other one off with the yell. Luckily

Yikes! You know, according to some tarot readers, the snake represents the unacknowledged subconscious. (Other people say it represents a penis, but I just don't think that makes sense in this context.) What is lurking underneath conscious awareness that is trying to get your attention by attacking you in the face?!

It probably has something to do with the cold I'm battling right now; the congestion wakes me up and there's snot everywhere...

Well, I suppose that could be possible, too. But why does your snot take on the form of a snake in your dreams?! Could it be that your mind fears that your snot might be poisonous?!
