Great photos! I was a confirmed Nikon guy for many years, and I still think they make the best glass.

Thanks!

I do like my Nikons, though it's disappointing how they seem to be resting on their laurels and not really advancing the technology much. And would it really be so hard to add the U1/U2/U3 to more than a couple models?? I find that feature to be extremely valuable. In fact, a deal killer for any new model

Yeah, I know what you mean.

I suppose part of it is the business model that says new features should be released incrementally, so that hardcore photographers will continually feel the desire to upgrade. And DSLR tech overall is fairly mature these days.

The bigger issue is that the camera market in general is really hurting now that so many people just use smartphones ... a permanently smaller camera market is inevitably going to lead to fewer new models and less tech advancement.

I still definitely consider myself a photo hobbyist, but the strong majority of my photos are shot with an iPhone nowadays. (My current interchangeable lens camera is a mirrorless Olympus, since its smaller size makes it more conducive to backpacking.)

Absolutely, the iPhone in particular has done a ton to push what's capable in such a small package. And of course "the best camera is the one you have with you." With that said it still can't come close to matching the quality of the glass or size of sensor in a DSLR, or even mirrorless, camera.

Maybe it's because I'm still in the "honeymoon" phase, but I'll still take my DSLR on day hikes. I'm not really into backpacking anymore, but it would definitely be more cumbersome there.

If/when I do more international traveling again, I'm not entirely sure I'd want to take a flashy "look at me, I'm a tourist with money" camera. For that, I'd be tempted to get something like a Sony RX100, but wow are they pricey for what they are!
