No longer completely protected as chess pieces go, Dean is shoved into a square on the border of the chessboard, away from the comforting company of Daniel and Dean's new troll-friend, Sollux.

So he's next to the shiny insect lady.

The seven-foot tall one.

How to cope?

"How you doin'?" he grins, offering a nod.

She glances at him and--recognizes him. This is what causes her to actually answer him, rather than just looking straight ahead.

This is idiotic.

"I ain't arguin' with that," he agrees, scratching at his chin and gazing across the chessboard. Pieces are moving and he's starting to get antsy for a confrontation.

"Y'know if you keep makin' that face, it's gonna get stuck that way. It'd be a real shame."

"The grumpy one."

She arches an eyebrow--or something in the vicinity of her browbone, anyway, since there's no actual hair. She makes her skeptical face.

It is somewhat similar to her grumpy face in that it consists mostly of narrowed eyes. As do most of her faces.

Maybe it already is stuck like that.

Insulted. Not grumpy.

"The Hell are you so sore about, then?"

Maybe if Dean understood chess and also knew that she was a Queen, then he would get it.

As things stand, not so much.

I am an excellent strategist, especially where chess is concerned, and yet I have been put in the place of a pawn.

"...oh."

So that's what this is all about. Manly Womanly pride, and all that. Whatever.

"I don't think it woulda helped even if you were the most important piece, 'specially since the psycho-sisters are in charge."

Didn't I tell you not to call me that?

Her gaze is beginning to develop a resemblance to that of a mantis.

Praying mantis are those bugs that eat their bug-husbands, aren't they? Welp.

"Can't recall."

Yeah, those. Also sometimes hummingbirds twice their size.

I suggest you begin to recall now.

"Geez, don't be so prickly."

Just a friendly word of advice.

"You're not gonna rip my arm off, are you? I've kinda lost some pieces of myself already and I ain't keen to lose any more."

He's just joking around, if you can't tell.

Don't be presumptuous, of course I'm not.

That's right, presumptuous. He's not important enough for her to rip his arm off. That is reserved for certain special people like Spades Slick and...pretty much only Spades Slick.
