kittensofdoom and I were hoping to get over to Vienna to catch up with Hagen in a couple of weekends time. Unfortunately we've only just heard back from him (family stuff) so I'm looking for flights at the last minute

I sometimes fly to or from airports a bit further away from my destination. For example to Brussels instead of Amsterdam. Last autumn I took the train from Zagreb to Milan because there were no flights to Lisbon from Croatia. Of course i had a lot more time then...sigh
Luckily Bristol-Amsterdam was always conveniently cheap :-)
EasyJet ae pretty good from Brizzle, though not sure if the fly to Vienna or not. You'll have a better selection of cheap ailines (bmi for example) if you're prepared to travel from farther afield, though.
Few-no budget airlines fly into Vienna international.
The exception from the UK is easyjet LTN->VIE, which is usually as expensive as commercial from Bristol.
You could try flying from LHR/LGW/STN to either Graz (1-2hrs by train), Linz(2-3hrs by train) or Bratislava(~1hr by train). You get buggered with travel at both ends then but you'd probably save money.
There are also Direct flights from BRS->Budapest (2-3hrs from vienna by train) with ryanair, don't know what the connections in Budapest are like.
I usually use Db.de to check international train times, although it doesn't give you prices for journeys not connecting in Germany.
