Lol. We had a similar problem, although ours was that, since we live almost mile off the road, our mailbox was constantly being stolen or broken by teenage punks in their rendition of a drive-by (Oh, no! Not the mailbox. NOT THE MAILBOX!!!). Anyhoo... We threatened to encase the dumb thing in cement, along the lines of your old mailbox, but about 4-5 feet tall. Hit THAT, punks. We were told that was illegal, because someone might hit it. Luckily, our mail lady hated having to drive up to the house every other day, so she suggested we hide it behind a tree, inside the driveway a little way.
But she STILL had to get permission from her supervisor. I think the Post Office is actual a front for Communism. :)
I once made a "blueprint" of my parents' house using Paint... ah the memories! I still have it on my computer, actually, but since they moved the furniture around it doesn't match anymore.
