So Long, Fanfiction.net

Apr 14, 2012 20:14

Today I finally went ahead and deleted all of my Fanfiction.net bookmarks. It was a bit of a pang to do so, since I've found some great fics on that site over the years. Unfortunately, the number of good stories was massively, *massively* overwhelmed by the utter crap that I found there (the crap to quality ratio of FF.net remains the worst of ( Read more... )

While I agree with you and don't do any searches there, I do read fic when someone recs it there. A couple of my favorite authors post there all the time. What I do like about ff.net is that I can increase the font so easily. I can always hit ctl and + to increase the page size, but that doesn't always work. Some pages are columned and as the words get larger the column gets narrower. Sometimes it makes it so I have to scroll sideways as well as up and down and I'm sure not wanting to do that. So it's easier sometimes just to read something on ff.net instead of the LJ sites. Some archives have a font enlarging option and that's always nice ( ... )

I would certainly not spurn a recced fic just because it was on ff.net! That said, though, I do so little on LJ these days that I rarely find fics from recs (and I never read fics on LJ at all anymore), so it could be a long while before I have to break out Fanfiction Downloader again:)

Oh, I do love Fanfiction Downloader and Flagfic.com. Both get used periodically.

While I like the idea of LJ, I find reading longer fics on there difficult. I prefer the archives that make viewing much easier on the eyes. AO3, FF, Skyehawke...etc.

I think the only reason I still appreciate ff.net is because of fanfiction downloader and it's better than LJ for posting stories. (in the sense that it is easier to get a single file from ff.net than LJ.) Having said that I still prefer A03 though I'm not sure I'd want all the badfic that is currently posted to ff.net to migrate to A03...

The whole reason I got into ff.net in the first place was because (with Fanfiction Downloader) I was able to get single file versions of stories that could be positively massive (while I've completely stopped reading LJ in part because so many people break up stories into a zillion parts more than is even necessary). That said, I don't need a special program to get the single file version from AO3, and while it was much, much easier to browse over at ff.net, it also produced much, much worse fic ( ... )

I just hope more of the good authors use A03 because now that Calibre has this fanfiction downloader plugin it makes it even easier to add stories to my Sony reader. I've been able to read a lot more since I found this plugin. :)

Actually, Fanfiction Downloader had a .mobi option and AO3 has the option of a .mobi download. Which is why I now have more ebook files than my Kindle can handle:)

These days, the only time I go to FF.net is when I'm looking for a known story or author. I do have an account, mainly so that I can sign up for alerts. But that's really it.

That's pretty much where I am at now (and it feels amazingly freeing to be able to say that:)

Same here, or if I'm following a rec.
