Always something there to remind me

P. needed a haircut. He had been trying for three weekends in a row to get to the barber shop when M. was actually open, but that's part of the joy of living on an island - you get what you get. (In this case, M. had been spending time with his grandchildren on one weekend, and attending his brother-in-law's funeral on the other.) But today P. made ( Read more... )

The barber Manolo like is always busy and has a line-up so he now insists on making appointments. I suppose that's more time-efficient but it's not like a barbershop any longer.
Oh well... the times they are a-changing....

That is a very fancy timer and what a bargain! That was a great find!

I think it's important to have books as memory-joggers and reminders...

I think if M. decided to move to appointments, people wouldn't know what to do with themselves. You show up, you sit on the bench, and you wait.

They are marketed towards commercial kitchens, but I can think of plenty of occasions when I've had three different timers running for one meal.

The note on the inner dust jacket flap for the diner book says "turn left at the stoplight, and the first business you'll come to is the Streamliner Diner." Certainly the case in 1990! Ooooh, and the recipe for the Tollhouse Shortbread Bars they made for the Seattle Folk Festival is in here! I'ma make some for me! They don't do sweets like this often, as it takes a fair amount of time, so when they do on a slower day they sell out quickly.

Wow - that’s a serious timer! I have timers all over my oven (5 for each hot plate and I have two ovens so 2 more) so I don’t think I’d need it but it looks awesome! Isn’t it great to pick up bargains!??

It's such a treat to find something that will be put to good use - the first two slots are now set up to handle the morning tea, as each has a different brewing time. I was trying to remember when I'd last been in a charity shop of any sort and it's probably been at least a year; it used to be a regular occurrence.

It was comfortably warm and sunny, with a good breeze, and there were many doggos out with their humans who were amenable to ear scritches. Later in the evening we watched Gardeners' World and P. read us the first chapter of Wil Wheaton's Still Just A Geek. A very good day!

That sounds like such a lovely trip into town - I really think we appreciate such things more now then we did 3 years ago :)

The timer is quite amazing - although I use she-who-must-not-be-named for that sort of thing as she can also cope with multiple timings - but $10 is such a bargain!

I have cookery books for sentimental reasons, too - including 2 copies of Mary Berry's Fast Cakes.

There is someone called GuldiMuldi on the UK version of Etsy who sells second hand Russian Tea glasses at very reasonable prices... just saying :P

It's been a while since recreational thrifting happened. :-D

Janet the Phone can do multiple timers, but they don't have different sounds, and this one does. Also a record function, so it can shout something like "Fries are done!" when a timer finishes.

When P. was travelling for work, he would bring me cookbooks from the cities he visited, and of course that was one of the few things I brought back from our trip to Bermuda many years ago.

What I need to do is sit P. down in front of a page or two of Google Images and tell him to point at the ones that stir memories, then try to find them. I don't know what he was on about, I've been through the cabinets, there's more than enough room for a couple of tea glasses.

Our Alexa was a gift from the daughterly family which we don't use an awful lot, except to play music.

But she does function well for timing as you can tell her what each one is for and she tells you it by name when it is up - so 'Alexa set a 15 minute cake reminder' can run alongside 'Alexa set a 25 minute reminder to wake Paul', and so on and she will say 'your cake reminder is up!' 'your reminder to wake Paul is up!' But she is a much more expensive reminder than your new one - and less interesting to look at!
