Room to breathe

Hi, I'm here, I'm okay! Our weather is at last consistently staying above 70F: prior to last week we'd had five whole hours in that range during the year to date. Of course it is hot TODAY, when we were loading the truck for the Rotary auction. (It's 33C/87F right now - all the blinds are down and my herbs are finally happy ( Read more... )

You brought back such a good memory for me. Many years ago, a friend and I and her teenaged son Justin used to camp out in a parking lot in sleeping bags for an enormous rummage sale. When the building opened up in the morning and everyone rushed in, we would park Justin somewhere to guard all the goodies we'd find and pile around him. We always came home with so much fun (and unbelievably inexpensive) stuff, and the camping out was a blast.

Oh, what a lovely memory! Thank you for sharing it with me.

The auction has designated "park your treasures until you can bring your car up" spaces, with a ticket system like a coat check.

Space, less clutter...two wonderful things! When we get back to Spain we have PLANS to do similar clear-outs. I hope we do as well as you have done/are doing.

Night before last I told P. that I'd packed up his old razor and moved it onto a shelf in the walk-in closet, along with two boxes of cleaning cartridges and the charging station. He looked thoughtful for a second, then said "I suppose I don't need to keep that, do I? I really like the grooming kit, and that razor did bite me once . . . ." I fished another box out of the cardboard dumpster and hauled the lot to Goodwill before he could change his mind!

It's really nice to look back on things you've had and then get rid of them, isn't it! I had a load of things the kids had made us when they were at school and when we moved I took photos of them and then recycled them. There are only so many embroidered/cross-stitched/painted things you can store especially if you've forgotten which kid made what (I'm such a terrible mother LOL!).

We got rid of so many books and ornaments and stuff we didn't need. I'm still working on Mr Cee to get rid of the old disk - it was a victory when I made his sort through the huge bag of old power leads we had and he realised that most of the gizmos/computers/tech they belonged to has long since died and been recycled.....

I took a lot of photos of things I wanted to remember and then passed the physical things on. Takes up much less space that way LOL!

There's a certain amount of "But I really wanted this thing and spent money on it and argh" to be waded through, sometimes - I'm getting better at telling myself "Yep, money's long spent, learning restraint is a work in progress, it's been sitting in a box and we forgot we owned it, let it rejoin the Great Material Continuum and make someone else happy."

Getting rid of the projector and all its accessories freed up enough space in one of the huge plastic totes that I could move some other things in there, and revealed three cardboard boxes full of "treasures" I'd completely forgotten about. I've only sorted through one, but apart from the really lovely incense pot everything else in it is going.

Wow, that is quite an auction! I probably could supply about that many items out of our basement. *looks at the still-too-stashed stash and sighs*

*pats you* You know how slow a process this has been for us! Do not be sad.

Oh I do love a good clear out! (Which reminds me, I must email our local vet and ask if they still welcome spare towels, as the animal shelter says it has enough filling all their storage space to last them for the next 5 years..!)

And there is nothing quite as satisfying as having empty storage space - well, perhaps finding something you absolutely must have at a rummage sale equals it - especially if you have empty space in which to put it :)

I keep finding things! The other day I pulled out a storage bag to put the last duvet away - prematurely, as it turned out, as today it's 13 and pouring. IT IS JULY WHAT THE HELL - and there was Youngest Cat's "dancing blanket", a crocheted throw that lived at the foot of our bed that he would jump on, make biscuits all over, and then settle in to pounce at any indication of a "blankiemouse", namely our feet. And P.'s shorts from before we moved to the PNW, when he was 30 pounds heavier ( ... )
