Of books

Sometimes I hate finishing a truly good book; one that just occupies your mind and you just devour it. It just leaves you with this empty space, of wanting to read another great book that you get that caught up in, and leaves you on the hunt for something just as good and not finding it. It's a very annoying feeling, and I don't know if that's even ( Read more... )

:) I read that series with my 13 year old, what fun books! I heard they are making a movie of it :)

I feel the same way when I get to the end of a good book.... and I pine for the next Neil Gaiman novel

Have you read American Gods? What did you think?

I know EXACTLY how you feel. I've gotten this feeling a thousand times. The worst was after I read Pride & Prejudice, but there have been others. Oh, yesss, preciousss, there have been others.

Have you read His Dark Materials or some of the other "children's" series out there? I'd love a mini-review of those. I'm hoping that someday I'll have time to tackle a series again and I'm curious about many of the children's books that they're currently making into movies.

I have the first Dark Materials book, and have started it a few times, and keep putting it down. I want to read it before the movie, for sure, so I need to try to start that one soon. I've heard the first one is good, but the other two are crap. That's just what I hear, though.

I don't like HDM at all. It is extremly anti-religious (not that that matters to you...) and Pullman is a very grating author. He purposly wrote the books to tear down the faith of young children and hates CSLewis.

Here is one article he wrote about Lewis - http://www.crlamppost.org/darkside.htm

And this is a good article in defense of Lewis
http://dedulysses.wordpress.com/2005/12/26/for-the-love-of-narnia-refutes-pullmans-problems-with-lewis/

Also this article - http://snopes.com/politics/religion/compass.asp

And yes I have read all three books. I don't normally try to tell people not to read a book... but I have some major problems with Pullman.

Hmmm. That does, actually, matter to me. I think I'll be avoiding them.

Thanks!

When I'm reading a book and I feel like that, I'm torn between wanting to race on to the end and wanting to read really slowly to prolong the experience :-) And I do know just what you mean about that empty feeling after finishing. Après la lecture, la tristesse.

I know that feeling exquisitely after finishing an excellent book! I want desperately to read another book in the series, and if it hasn't been written yet, I'm nearly in a funk. I half-heartedly pick up another book, but my heart and mind are still with the previous story, and nothing seems as good. I almost have to read some inferior books to cleanse the palate and make me appreciate anything else!

My library hasn't gotten the Meyer's series, and I did request them. Maybe there is a budget problem. If they're that good, perhaps I'll request them for Christmas.

I really think they are great. And i know I"m not alone, so I feel better about recommending them. ;)

I think I"m going to go back and read something I've already read and been satisfied with, an old fave, and I'll feel better about moving on. Does that make sense?

feeling a little dumb that a tween was advising me on my reading material

Don't feel dumb! There's a lot of quality YA lit out there. I really enjoy YA, and I'll make no apologies about it! Plus when I'm finished I can discuss it with Kelsey and we can be all geeky together. In the last couple of months I've read Pratchett's YA Discworld books (Wee Free Men, A Hatful of Sky, and Wintersmith) and Dianna Wynne Jones Chrestomanci books and enjoyed them more than the "adult" selections I've tackled. I'm going to look up Stephanie Meyer in our library catalog and see what they have of hers.

I put Twilight on hold, but yeesh, I'm 20th on the list. I didn't think we had hold lists that long for any of the YA titles with the exception of HP.

That's so cool! My parents were never readers, really, so i missed out on that. Some of the YA books are just so good _ where were these when I was a tween, and reading the Little House books 14 times each? ;)
