Edward had been playing the part of a hermit for the better part of two months. He rarely went out, and his tan had faded considerably because of it. People, and sentient beings that aren't people.

"Dai stiho, Edward," Spot chirps pleasantly from the table nearby.

And then he sprouts several new eyestalks and waves them at him.

Edward glanced up at the voice, and smiled ever so slightly. He wasn't sure he'd ever adjust to Dairine's talking computer partner, but he'd come close. She waved his left hand in casual greeting. "Hey. Haven't seen you in a while," he said, trying to be at least marginally personable. He could make small talk with Spot.

But wherever Spot was, Edward knew Dairine likely wasn't far behind.

Wait a second... Edward thought to himself. There was something a bit... off, something he couldn't quite put his finger on.

"I've been here," Spot says, a faintly accusing tone to his cheerful electronic voice. The new eyestalks retreat back into his body and he scuttles across the table.

Which is Dairine's cue to show up, bounding out of her room with all the glee of a three-year-old in a cotton candy factory. "Hey!"

In Edward's opinion, Dairine was far more exuberant than was really necessary. Still, it drew his attention, and he couldn't help but ask, "What's got you so excited?"
