I'm a tad bored, so despite the deafening lack of interest, I thought I'd post an update on
my "friends and family" Madden 10 franchise.
First, I thought I should mention the slight change in the team name. The Bandits have become the Brigands. I think it has a slightly more erudite feel to it. Here's the logo, as best I was able to re-create it (no way to export it from the game that I could find, short of less-than-crisp screenshots, and EA doesn't seem to have the custom logos viewable online) - the text treatment is mine:
With the name change, I re-started the franchise, and the game generated a new coaching staff, so DeAndré Anderson is, sadly, no more. The Brigs are now under the charge of Head Coach Craig Patrick. I also renamed a couple of players from my initial roster.
Playing in the NFC South division, in place of the Carolina Panthers (originally, it was AFC South, in place of the Jacksonville Jaguars), the Brigands were stunningly successful in their first season, defeating their down-the-road-a-bit AFC counterparts, the New England Patriots, in Super Bowl XLIV. In addition, a number of Brigands were named to the NFC Pro Bowl team, including QB Brendon Lynch; HB Bryce Anderson; FB Bryan Lambert; WR Terrence Carrington; DEs Gordon Hallett and Marvin Brown; DT Dave Houston; LBs Victor Smith, Chris Peña and Keith Wright; CBs O.G. Phirman and Darrell Richardson; and S Joey Mercurio.
In the offseason, the team signed a $17M deal for stadium naming rights, so for at least the next year, the Brigs' home field will be known as Scarn Paper Stadium. There were also a few stadium upgrades, including adding cupholders to all the seats, opening an internet café in the concourse, and adding heated turf to the field (no snowplow games for the Brigands), as well as a state-of-the-art solar panel array to reduce energy costs.
As for personnel moves, Brian Stewart was hired as the new Defensive Coordinator. The team roster remained largely, though not totally, intact. Four players were lost to free agency: defensive tackles Noah Livingston (signed with the Colts) and Lynn Greer (Broncos), and linebackers Denys Furey (Bears) and Larry Travers (Patriots). All four were backup players with Boston; all four are starters with their new teams. The Brigands signed free agents Pierre Woods and Zak Deossie to replenish the linebacker corps, and addressed other positions in the draft.
Boston signed six of their seven draft picks:
Rd. 1: DT Robert Brewer (Duke)
Rd. 2: DT Sean Gainer (LSU)
Rd. 3: LB J.D. Schumacher (Arizona)
Rd. 4: LB Byron Ferch (North Carolina)
Rd. 6: WR Sione Williams (Illinois)
Rd. 7: HB Brad Pinkett (Rhode Island)
Fifth-round choice WR Jonathan Lewis (Georgia Tech) did not make the roster after training camp.
While returning a punt, Pinkett suffered a season-ending torn pectoral in the final pre-season outing, a victory over the Colts, and was placed on Injured Reserve. During the post-game press conference, Coach Patrick responded to the situation, saying, "we will, doubtless, be looking at free agents, but I'm just grateful that we have such depth and talent in our running back corps that we really don't have to rush into any decisions here."
So, here's how the team looks going into the regular season:
