Zahn, Perry & SW

Tuesday night I went to Powells Books for their 30th anniversary Star Wars celebration. The 501st Cloud City Garrison was there, and besides their imposing regalia (stormtroopers, TIE pilot and Boba Fett), they were impressive for standing in costume, helmets and all, for the entire two-plus hours-- and for their gentleness with the children. The ( Read more... )

Wow, sounds like that was a great evening! I thought about making the jaunt over there, but didn't get off work in time.

Interesting questions from the audience- especially about the direction of the EU. Makes you wonder where it will go after the LOTF series wraps up ( and who knows what terrible precipice that'll lead us to, anyways)

Sorry to hear that Traviss's ideas are not respected by her peers. Personally, I thought she made the greatest single contribution to the EU with the construction of the whole Mandalorian culture and language. I even used a word of Mando'a in my last chapter.

Steve Perry is a funny guy. I'll be quite interested to read more of his Vader interpretation in DS.

Maybe there'll be more 30th anniversary events we can go to this year!

I imagine there will be more events coming up. This weekend the 501st is going to be at a charity event at Krispy Kreme in Beaverton. They were invited by Washington County Sheriff Dept, which is something between weird and... well, weird. :)

Yeah, I like Traviss's ideas, too. Love those books. (Less than a month until her LOTF book is out and we learn who Jacen sacrifices.) I think child-Barlow was hooked on the Fett mystique and doesn't enjoy his daydreams being blown away.

Sounds like a wonderful evening. The 501st can be a lot of fun, they turned out in force (forgive the pun) last month when the Wisconsin Film Fest had the world premiere of Heart of an Empire.

Looking at Star Wars EU, I think Star Trek EU had done it better not having huge master plans. They have book arcs, but they don't get locked into one idea for years.

And yes, sometimes continuity takes a hit, and yeah, they've had some stinkers; but they've let themselves open to interesting writers and ideas.

Star Wars really doesn't have a John M. Ford to write both a wonderfully comic novel mixing Star Trek with Gilbert & Sullivan in How Much for Just the Planet? , or exploring Klingon culture in Final Reflection in a way I much prefer to Travis's Mando culture. Or Peter David's New Frontier series that is totally OC. And I really can't imagine Star Wars taking the risk of letting Barbara Hamley mix Star Wars with Here Comes the Bride the way she did with Star Trek Ishmael Star Wars feels like they played it too safe, more of the ( ... )

I loved Ishmael. It's the only ST book I bought twice.
