Operation: Grits

May 15, 2008 10:54

This morning, I attempted to make cheese grits, and was moderately successful.

I at first took the endeavor to be a complete failure. As I was cooking it, the concoction was lumpy and unappetizing, and not gritty at all. But I managed to break down the lumps small enough that I could easily mistake the lumpiness for grittiness. And it was quite ( Read more... )

Finely ground corn meal is very different to coarse corn meal - in fact, hominy is a type of coarse corn meal. If you've not done a ton of cooking, keep in mind that's it's extremely important to read over your recipe carefully first (sounds like you're learning this one already!), really pay attention to what the ingredients are and get *exactly* what's stated, and do some serious checking up if you have to make a substitution or don't fully understand the directions. Things that might seem unimportant if you don't know the ingredients or recipe well can actually be crucial. If you're ever unsure about an ingredient or direction in a recipe, look it up on the web.

I've found that if you just always pay attention, prepare well, and follow directions, most recipes are quite easy - there are some things you're bound to need some trial and error to get right, though. :)

haha those cheesy grits sound good. And cooking isn't as easy as it sounds, it's almost like an artform when you're great at it.

Alton Brown is crazy! lol.

you dare curse THE alton brown? omg. He knows his stuff! try it again with all the correct equipment and reading thoroughly...i'm sure it will be better. Alton Brown is my homeboy. I absolutely love him...nothing i've made by him has been bad.

I've seen the grits episode. In fact...HERE IT IS!

You are awesome. :-) And no, I'm not really down on Alton Brown. After all, he made my feeble corn meal concoction using the wrong ingredients and equipment turn out yummy despite me. :-)
