Is trying to work out whether it is worth a degree (again!)

Nov 27, 2008 11:33

My tutor and I had a chat yesterday regrading whether I want to step up to the degree course. I need to make a decision by next Friday. As far as my academic work to date goes I am getting good enough marks to do the degree, and if I keep it up I am on track for a 2:1 or 2:2.

How costly is the degree? can you work at all while you do it? It's very tricky isn't it balancing all the pros and cons. I must give you a call, it's been such a long time. Actually I should pop over to visit. Have horsebox so I can solve horse care by bringing them along! I am sure I can find a horse B&B nearby so they can hang out.

Ok, I realise this doesn't help E (sorry), but I had to ask....Horse B&B?!?!? Really?

Yeah, British Horse Society have a book of them and there are various websites of places to take "horse holidays".

Argh; it's a hell of a decision. I always think with things like this you have to go with your instinct - a friend once decided not to go ahead with her Ph.D. having been dead set on it for years, but when she got to the actual point of taking up the Ph.D. course her heart wasn't in it. That's not to say you shouldn't do the degree, but that I'd probably listen to what your instincts tell you over and above your intellect.

Anyway, *hug* on general principle.

Hugs always gratefully received :-)
It really comes down to how the 'chat' with Jason goes over the weekend. If he can't afford to fund me, then it is pretty much game over. The good news is that the mortgage has come down by £200 per month..... I don't see a significant interest rate rise before Feb 2010....
If money wasn't an issue then I would have no hesitation.

Out of interest if it wasn't for the debt then would it be an easier decision? It sounds like ti might be yes if it weren't for the debt.

You would be right. At least half the debt would be on a student loan basis, so not repayable until earning over £15,000. The rest is down to generosity of Jason who counts as a partner despite not being married.

I haven't got any helpful advice - just best wishes that whichever you decide works out well for you.

Oh - and congratulations that you're getting the results to be offered the degree option! Something to be pleased about whether you go for it or not.

Thank you :-)

Am pleased that I am getting better marks than my last degree. May have something to do with a more settled lifestyle :-)

All good questions :-) Thank you.

Have planned chat with Jason over weekend, so pretty much hinges on that. Will keep you posted.

Are you about over Christmas? If you can cope with a dog you are welcome to visit. James may be here. Feel free to pop in if it fits into plans, but if not don't panic.

I have some free time in January if you wanted to visit and wander over some well known hills.

*hugs*
