Ugh...the Japanese bathing experience is just phenomenal! I coulda stayed there for hours if it wasn't for the line-up outside. (There was a private bath in the ryokan I stayed in.:D)
Yah, was very sorry I didn't get to a sento when I was back in '01.
Yah, ass'n'ankles ... very nearly literal. They always put the tub near a drafty window too.
Someday ... just before I build the shop of my dreams ... there will be the sauna/ofuro of my dreams. It may just be a galvanized cattle tank, but it will be hot and large.
The first hot tub I was ever in was just a cattle tank. It was out in the woods, and there was a fire underneath to heat it. But being stoned Californicans, no one bothered to wash before getting into it. (There was no place to do so easily anyway.) So it got very grotty very quickly. It was fun anyway.
Showering is much more hygenic. If you want fun, shower with a friend.
I would have to assume that it's possible to buy a grownup-size bathtub, but this assumes ownership of the walls that would be displaced. In any case, I'm fully in agreement that baths have unpleasant geometry. Makes the sexy bathing-together thing... less so.
I guess it's somewhat of a fad nowadays to just install extra shower heads to avoid the situation where one person is stuck standing in the cold air while the other person gets the water. Seems like a pretty decent idea... I would assume it might even be possible in a rental situation: just thread a tee where the shower head goes and plumb it red-green style over to the other side.
That's the thing about a nice sauna. No height restrictions. Unless the ceiling is so low that sitting on the top bench makes you hit your head.
I would like to say, that as a 5'5" individual, bathing is still often an ass-and-ankles experience, though to a lesser extent. I can either (1) stretch my legs all the way out, and have my hips down (somewhat uncomfortably) submerged or I can (2) crunch my legs up and have my torso submerged but most of my legs uncomfortably squashed, cold, and damp. The intermediate is to have a simply wretched ass-and-ankles experience as you do. I have determined that when I have a house of my own, an ofuro will be essential. And then all my friends will want to come over (boo-yah!)
a power greater than myself will restore me to a shorter size.
ok, so my list of reasons to enjoy being 5'4" is now: I can walk under low growing branches, I can wear 7" heels and still be significantly shorter than almost everyone I've ever dated, and I fit in bathtubs. Never thought of that one.
You need to try being just a wee bit too tall to fit in a tub easily as well as being built as *wide* as the tub. Makes for even more fun. Add a bad shoulder to the mix and there's almost no way to get out of the thing. If I ever own a home again, I'll put in the huge tub, but there will be a crane overhead so I can also get out when I'm pruney.
