The morning after the night before [Chris, Karl]

Aug 08, 2010 16:23

The play had gone well. While a part of him wished he could have made it down to Comic Con to see Karl and Zach, Chris had put that out of his mind, focusing entirely on the performance. By the time he walked out the stage door he was tired, yet riding that high from a night where everything had gone right. He’d signed a few autographs, even ( Read more... )

"Great," said Karl, not particularly looking forward to being poked and prodded and generally scrutinized, but still rather interested to see the sickbay. It had been a cool set, but obviously none of the beeping, blinking machines had actually done anything. "As long as we don't get thrown in the brig for being body-snatching intruders."

A shrill beep broke through the short silence following his words, and made them all jump. Well, everyone but Uhura. It seemed to have emanated from a computer-like thing on the desk nearby, something on the screen flashing, and Karl was the first up and over to inspect it. "A communication request. From Ensign Joanna McCoy. That's Bones' daughter, right? I better...yeah ( ... )

"Just directions back to, er, your quarters? Spock's- are you two living together?" Zach tried to piece the whole idea together. The movie had set up Spock and Uhura being together, but seeing it in person was so much stronger. There was more there than he would have known. The worry, concern, love in her eyes just about broke his heart. All he could think of was Zoe going through that sort of pain.

"We are. Spock and I are... engaged, actually," she finally settled upon. In Terran terms, it was correct, even if it didn't begin to define what they were. "I can walk you back," she offered. "I should go check in on the bridge, anyway."

Nyota turned to the others. "I'm sure they wouldn't mind you borrowing some clean clothes, if you'd like to shower and change."

Wow. Spock and Uhura were engaged? That was a surprise -- but then, some time had passed since the events of their movie, and things had obviously developed beyond surreptitiously kissing in lifts. Karl briefly wondered what Sarek thought about it, but decided not to ask. "A shower sounds good," he agreed, and glanced at Chris again. "You, uh, mind if I go first? I'm kinda..."

He made an indecipherable little hand gesture, and mustered up all force of will not to blush again.

Engaged? Wow. Chris suspected he looked just as surprised as Karl and Zach. It was on the tip of his tongue to congratulate Uhura, but under the circumstances he remained quiet, realizing she must be incredibly worried about Spock.

Chris looked back at Karl, unable to help coloring a little. "No, go ahead," he told him. "I don't mind waiting. I'll just straighten up some out here." There were still a few things scattered on the floor - two pair of boots, and what looked suspiciously like a pair of boxers over by the wall. Overall it wasn't any messier than his own apartment, though.

Zach gave a small smile to Karl and Chris, then looked to Nyota and offered his, thankfully, cloth covered arm with a slightly bigger smile. The idea of just taking a few minutes and grounding himself, understanding (literally) what he was in, was a grateful one. because otherwise he was slightly terrified he would go insane

"All yours, Nyota," he said. The smile was the one thing that differed him from Spock, because he sounded a match in voice.

Nyota took a moment to show Chris and Karl how to contact her if they needed anything, then took the offered arm, smiling back at Zach. He was quiet as they walked down the corridor. Concerned, she glanced over at him. "I guess this is a lot to take in for all of us. Are you okay, though?"

"Can you get back to me on that question?" Zach asked quietly, trying not to laugh while he was in public. Even once people figured out that, if everything was true to the movie, most of their commanding crew was switched with someone who didn't know the first thing of it, he figured he had Spock's reputation to uphold.

"Just still getting used to this, as quickly as I can. Urban and Pine are still human but--" He spread a palm upwards slightly, indicating the obvious.

She squeezed his arm just a little. "...It's different," she replied, understanding. "It's strange for me, too. Sometimes you make a gesture that looks just like him, and I almost forget. But it must be harder for you. If I can help, tell me."

Nyota fell silent as they walked back, occasionally nodding to someone in passing but otherwise going over everything in her mind. She wondered where Spock was, and if the three of them had made contact yet.

"It's weird to hear that. I invented him, this Spock, essentially. Mr. Nimoy's Spock, do you know about that?" After she nodded with an odd expression on her lips, he continued. "I tried to copy his performance a little but in the end, it was still me. So now I can't tell if Spock acts like that because of what I did, or I ended up acting like that because of how Spock acts, or it is some giant universal coincidence." He kept his voice low, going quiet when someone passed by.

"I hadn't thought about it that way," Nyota admitted. "We've had others here, you know. People from other universes, even the other actors, including Mr. Nimoy. They're not on the ship now." She briefly explained about the new starbase and its purpose. "I'm not sure, but I imagine they must have wondered the same thing when they arrived."

"Actually, I hadn't heard about that." That was down right confusing. "But, I just spoke with Mr. Nimoy on the phone last night, and had dinner with Mr. Shatner. You mean the same thing that brought us on board?" That didn't make any sense, though.

"It was different with them," she remembered. "They appeared as themselves, or younger versions of themselves. And De--Mr. Kelley was with them." She listened to his reply, frowning a little as she tried to make sense of it all. "I'm not entirely sure how this works, or what if any sense it's supposed to make." She waved a hand to indicate the entire body of strange happenings.

Zach's lips parted with that. "Mr. Kelley? But he's dead." Zach was stunned. "You're telling me that dead people are coming back to life?" People switching bodies, coming back from the dead, change age were all supposed to be impossible, yet it was. "I have to say, there's a part of me waiting to wake up or see a white light."

"It's happened," Nyota said quietly. "Unbelievable, I know, but there it is." She looked over to see how he was taking it. Not surprisingly, he looked rather shocked. "It's a lot to absorb." She stopped when they reached the door to their--her--quarters, entering her code to open the door.

When they had both stepped inside, Zach searched for and met her eyes. "I'm sorry this happened, Nyota," he said softly, "and about waking up this morning." The corner of his mouth quirked. "We'll get them back. If they're the men we've portrayed them as, they'll find a way. This crew will, too."
