Bladder Working? anonymous July 15 2013, 17:11:42 UTC
Dear Emilie and Marcus,
I wonder how the doctor can tell that his bladder is working. Until your ZZZ posting, I would if asked have guessed that the bladder is inactive until birth. If not, then it's all the more complicated and amazing.

Hi - Pretty much all systems are go, at least in practice mode. The ultrasound shows lots of organs, including the bladder and how much fluid is in it. It changes from time to time, so that is considered to be evidence that it's working. The baby is of course swallowing amniotic fluid, and releases its urine into the amniotic fluid, but it's all more or less sterile and the amniotic fluid is refreshed quite frequently!
Love,
Emilie
