I'm having a lot of trouble dealing with the political climate these days. I'm divided pretty much straight down the middle when it comes to Hillary and Obama... I like them both, but I don't love either one. I agree with a lot of what they both have to say; they (and their supporters) have both said and done things that have made me cringe or ( Read more... )

Lorrie Moore, for god's sake, one of my favorite writers in the world -- wrote an op-ed piece claiming that the time for female presidents has passed because women have come far enough.

...huhwhah? That's just. I don't even know what that is, it's so wrong.

A few posts about her op-ed that I particularly liked:

Feminism Is So 30 Years Ago

If We're a Post-Feminist Society Now, How the Hell Did I Miss the Feminist One?

The whole thing is pretty fucking depressing.

I should add by way of a warning that some of the comments on that first link are pretty infuriating... deriding Moore in misogynistic ways, which is fairly ridiculous, given what they're deriding her for. Yay for massive blind spots.

I'm so very torn over the election. I have reservations regarding Obama's experience - look what 8 years with an inexperienced president has given us! I also lived through the Carter years and while I respect what he has done since leaving office, Jimmy Carter's inexperience in national policy was devestating at the time.

However, I can't find I can overlook Hillary's misrepresentation of going to Bosnia. Making up a story about landing amid gunfire to make you seem tougher? Is the quitessential Clinton "thing" - say whatever you need to say to give the "right answer".

Women have come "far enough"? Far enough for WHO?

Still holding out for a Clinton/Obama ticket. Unlikely, but it makes me happy to think of maybe 16 years of not batshit crazy in the Whitehouse. (And yes, I think Obama needs a few more years of experience on the international front, not to mention the federal front under his belt.)

I like him, I'll vote for him, if it comes to that. But I've looked at the primary states he's won and I look at the electoral college and I'm not 100% sure he'll pull it out from under McCain. That's gut more than science, but McCain plays pretty heavily to the moderate crowd and while independent voters could swing for Obama, I'm not entirely sure they'll break for him rather than McCain.

I let my subscription on DailyKos lapse because of the Hillary bashing, and I've been a paying member there since 2000.

See, and I have to say, on my flist, I've had to bite my tongue several times because people can't just say that they like Hillary, which I'm cool with. I am, however, not cool with the fact that people feel the need to vomit up vitriol in Obama's direction.

And the fact that so often discussions of Obama and why people don't want to vote for him mention him "playing the race card" or adopt stereotyped "black" speak when referencing him in a negative way. Honestly, I'd rather have Obama but I'd be happy with Clinton. What I'm not happy about, personally, is the fact that this race has changed my opinion of people I used to like and showed just how racist and unwelcoming to PoC fandom can be.

The fact that fandom is sexist... well, I already knew that.

Amen. The irrational Hillary!Hatred (which is unchanged since 1991, I think, or, possibly magnified) just makes me sad and makes me cringe. Well said.
