here [Nighttime, day 26]
It does not take long to inform everyone in the room that we are moving. Some of the guests offer final condolences and retire for the evening; others agree to meet us at the Tavern. Wanda and I make sure that everyone is moving either to gather their things or say final farewells to Kora and Cary, as well as to thank Miss Bathory for her hospitality, before we head out the door. Verdandi left earlier to go and warn Thomas about the incoming crowd, and I stop only long enough to collect my coat and my cane.
By the time we get there, the first guests have already arrived and are settled at tables with drinks. Thomas is setting out mugs and bottles with a slightly harried look on his face, and Verdandi is nowhere to be seen; I imagine that she is in the cellar, pulling out yet more libations for the guests. More arrive as Wanda and I hang up our coats. Most are seated or gathered in small groups, talking in low voices. The mood is still heavy and subdued, but that is how it should be.
I take the time to go around and make sure that all is well with those that are here. When I am satisfied, I settle at a table by the window, the one where I see Verdandi most often seated. Wanda excuses herself; Lucien is not here yet, and she wants to be sure he is alright. She promises that she will be back later.
Thomas brings me a drink, and I settle back in my chair with a sigh. It promises to be a long night yet.
