I think its important to think of significant others as possibly being "The One", because if we don't, then why are we wasting our time? We need that feeling that a relationship could keep going places, otherwise it's doomed to fail. And each and every one is a learning experience. It's this vunerability that leads us to such heartbreak, but also to meaningful experiences (and what is life without meaningful experiences?) You can't have the feeling of extreme happiness without having the possibility of extreme hurt. But this is a gamble we take. Just my thoughts.
