Hi, I thought I would introduce myself. I am a senior (two months to go till B.A.) at a tiny college in mid-New York State. I became highly interested in ethnomusicology after taking a world music class my sophmore year. I am particularly fascinated by Northern Indian music, Balinese Gamelan, Australian Aboriginal, African drumming, and Japanese ( Read more... )

Hey -- for programs, I'd go straight to SEM's website where they have a listing of them.

Yes! That list is very helpful.

To the original poster, I am at FSU right now finishing my undergrad, and i may come back in a couple of years to do a master's (I'm trying to join the Peace Corps first). When I was planning on applying for grad school, though, my bf and I were looking for schools with Balinese Gamelan ensembles, since that is our main focus. UCLA is the top school, but very hard to get into. Bowling Green in Kentucky also has a good program, I think, and there may have been a school in New York as well.

There are no other ethnomusicology programs in Florida that I know of, so unless you come to FSU, you would not want to waste time here. Let me know if you have any other questions; I am very good friends with the professor who teaches Indonesian music here! We have several other wonderful ensembles, and the gamelan has been invited to perform at a state band teachers' conference in January. I am sorry I'm graduating and can't be in it too.

Oh! I just remembered that Wesleyan has a good program with a gamelan as well.

Yes, Wesleyan in Middletown, Ct. They are known as a hands-on program (like UCLA).

I just did a Sundanese gamelan concert like a couple of hours ago. Pitt (university of pittsburgh) has a great program. I'm not ethno (i'm historical musicology) but we cross over all the time. I was a princess in the drama of gandung arum...it was the awesome of the possums...

Nifty! Sundanese gamelan are pretty cool; kind of reminds me of Charles Ives and having the pianist/vocalist in different keys from each other, only instead there are three different tonal systems! So cool. I can't imagine trying to stay on pitch singing over that. hah

Cheers!

I'm not an ethnomusicologist per se, but as a jazz musician I'm interested in the topics discussed here, so I joined.

*waves from Ithaca* Aurora is a beautiful place. :-)
