I'm really enjoying Bulfinch's The Age of Fable, a collection of mostly Greek and Roman mythology, published in 1855. It's got some very smooth prose translations of Ovid, and it is well organized and edited, but it is so bowdlerized that it is not a good source for learning about what the ancients actually believed. I recall the day of the great air-raid in Yokohama on May 29, 1945. As I had been on duty at the school on the previous evening, I had stayed there all night.
