I remember buying a children's book for my nephew about "The Monastery That Was on Top of a Mountain". Some monks wanted to build a monastery and they put a large cross in the spot they were going to build. But for several days when they woke up in the morning the cross was moved to the top of a mountain. So they built the monastery there. I also read that Roomania has the most monasteries...is that true? I am envious. I want to visit. Also, in the current Smithsonian Magazine (American publication of Smithsonian institute) there was an article about monasteries that have frescoes painted on the outside walls. HAve you seen those?

It certainly does have a lot of monastaries :) I don't know what constitutes "most" though... monastaries per capita?

And yes, I did visit those monastaries. They are famed for those frescoes, because some of them were done 500 years ago and still remain. Pity they lost the recipe for the paint that lasts so long. It was so beautiful and peaceful at the monastaries.
