I’m so sorry you are feeling like this - I’m sure the toxic manager is not helping. Is there another library you could work at that isn’t too far away as an alternative? Or perhaps something related? Do you have mobile libraries or libraries in hospitals? If not is that something you’d like to set up?
I hope you find something you can do to that is more fulfilling.
No, each library within the county is separate and responsible for their own hiring. And there aren't any other viable alternatives nearby, especially since I don't have my degree. I suppose that's a reason to get it, but at this point, I'm still not sure that would be worth it.
Sounds a miserable work situation so I’m not surprised you are finding it hard to fight off depression. Your manager does sound like a nasty, unprofessional person.
Have you thought of trying a short online course to see if studying something again would be the right thing for you at this point?
There's a community college very close that I'm looking into about taking an individual course this summer if possible. I don't know if it's too late for that, but we'll see.
Are you able to do any of your missing studying on-line to see if you can get back to your studies, that way. That way it may give you time to work your way through the grey areas.
I have often thought about doing more serious study, but don't think I could focus enough. When I was at college, it was the "old-fashioned" way of lectures.
I was hoping to do most of the rest of my degree online if possible. There are a number of options available to me for that, or, if little ends up transferring, at least one CSU in close enough proximity to take classes in person. I always loved school, and my sister (she's currently trying to finish her degree online) says that my work ethic is perfect for it. I laughed, but she's not wrong when it comes to school. I love to learn.
I'm sorry you're dealing with such a lousy work situation. You are just trying to do the best job you can. How is your terrible manager not seeing that?
I think she partially thinks I'm stepping out of bounds by asking so many questions. I've discovered she's not great at seeing big picture stuff or being able to keep a lot of balls balanced at once.
Man, a bad boss (and she's definitely a bad boss) will make or break a job. I think I'd quit in your shoes. That's someone who is actively undermining your confidence, and you don't need that.
But let me ask you this: if you finished your BA, or another degree, would that give you a boost? If you could say, "I'm a college graduate," would that feel good, and boost your confidence? If so, I think it's worth it for that alone.
Finishing something is more than just about having a degree. It's about FINISHING SOMETHING. Having a degree is an accomplishment of its own. And I will say as someone who is involved in hiring and firing people, someone who goes back and finishes something? That's a quality I would find very attractive. No matter the degree. And if it was a non-traditional student, that tells me about their tenaciousness and work ethic. That also says a lot.
