What I don't understand is how well-adjusted everyone seems to be to the mundane routine that is their life. They are so reconciled with average. How have they all managed to remain driven and purposeful and attain some target or goal in their working life. At thirty, why am I starting over again, without commitment to something else, anything else

I JUST NOW saw this. I understand perfectly. What you're describing, what you're wanting, is what the term “middle class” actually refers to: Those who are not Alpha but not Gamma (or Epsilon).
I went to high school with this guy. We were chums; he'd remember me if we met. Fellow nerds, SF geeks, whatever. The resemblance ends there. He's a famed multi-millionaire - yes, he and his brother created Adobe Photoshop (!) and that's just one of his accomplishments. This guy won at life.
You and I lost. (Well, we've survived, so maybe not quite that bad, but still.)
What you need, if being a happy hausfrau doesn't work for you, is the kind of semi-skilled labor that has largely been replaced by automation. Run a machine that makes widgets. You don't need a college degree, you make a comfortable income, 40-hour week, vacation, health insurance, when you're off work your time is your own.
It used to be commonplace. People still want it - and a good many still need it, because they're not hard-charging super-genius stress- ( ... )

Unfortunately that kind of job, here, makes you not even enough to pay your rent. Not in this city anyway and not anymore... And most likely this job is the one that's making someone else ridiculously rich at your expense too! Most likely for undeserved reasons (or for reasons of happy childhood and social class privilege...)
I suppose that's the issue really, that the income isn't a comfortable one anymore, I was always knowingly in an underpaid role so I wouldn't have to conform...
