We've been having some rain - J is tired of it but I am fine. I didn't go further than the mailbox today, though - well, I suppose J's house is technically farther from my front door than the mailbox, and I did go there. Clockwork Boys, by T. Kingfisher. This is the first book in a two-part story set in the same world as Paladin's Grace, which I had just read and enjoyed. Halloween
Today after some errands (including turning in our ballots, yay!), I focused on Halloween. I cleaned up all the cobwebs around the door - my annual unkindness to Mrs Funnel Spider - and all the cat dishes, etc., but I didn't bother moving the cats' stacking baskets because with all the rain in the forecast I didn't actually expect trick-or- ( Read more... ) -
Doing good
I ended up having no time at all for work today, but still did worthwhile things. In the afternoon I worked on getting ready for tonight's board meeting, then I went downtown for that. It was in person, for once, and also in an interesting location, the fourth floor of a building I've been in many times, with pretty views of the fall color.

Paladin's Grace, by T. Kingfisher. This is the book I bought from the new "romantasy" bookstore, and it definitely qualifies as both a fantasy and a romance novel. Delgani, and their Vegas wrap-up
Let's see, today I watched this week's Delgani concert online, in preparation for attending in person on Tuesday. The theme was fugues, and they started with a modern person's interpretation of a famous Bach piece, then there was a string quartet by an obscure Czech composer named Novak, and later the first string quartet by Robert Schumann.

A Natural History of Dragons, by Marie Brennan. Memoirs of Lady Trent #1. This is a fun fantasy series about science, which I read as it came out; it's now time for a reread. Saturday socializing
Today my new friend who lives nearby invited me over for tea, snacks, conversation, and to look through her books on rhetoric, populism, and feminism, which I'd expressed interest in. We know lots of people in common, and she's very interesting! I was there for two and a half hours.

The prettiest little bookstore
I've been getting Facebook notices about a new bookstore downtown, specializing in "romantasy," and today was their grand opening. They were open until 9 pm (!), so I went to take a look before it got dark. They've done an amazing job decorating the place - it's really quite beautiful! Sleepy at the symphony
Last night was the first really cold night of the year, and I always turn the heat off for the night, waking up to the cold, but in the past I've had D to turn it on before I wake up, and also I guess the house isn't usually so cold when I've gone to bed.
