Are you looking for a straight swap? taking an image/backing up all of your data from your old drive? any number of scenarios like that? full-on forensic data recovery?

Is there anything more to this than a few screws and plugs? Because every time I've ever opened up my computer, everything was fairly intuitive. I'll put my name on the "might as well be helpful" list, but a good techie friend should be able to have you back on your feet with just a couple of pictures and a phone call.

Because your old computer was around the age of mine - I remember this the last time we talked. I'm guessing your old computer is from 2000-2002; every computer from this era uses a PATA or ATA interface and hence your drive and interface on your old motherboard use PATA.

Your new computer I think around 2005 or so is surely SATA, it's been the standard since 2003 I believe -- hence your broken drive is SATA and the connection(s) on your motherboard are SATA as well. Now if you told me you build your own computer there is a chance of their being a PATA port on your current motherboard. However, I'm quite certain that an inexpensive HP or equivalent brand has at most one or two SATA ports. If you provide me the model # I can tell you for certain.

If needed I can call and walk you through it. it really shouldn't be too hard. I've worked tech support in college and have a A+ system certification.
