Note: These fics all take place in the past, not in the current timeline. This one takes place when Robert is in London just after Alan's accident.

He knew it was a dream, but it was his favorite type of dream. His entire body hurt when he was awake, but right now the pain was dulled by her presence. He returned her smile and felt 5 years old again. She roughed up his hair and sat on his bed. Leaning against the headboard, she gathered him in to her arms and he felt like he was safe. As she rubbed her small feminine hands down his arm and over his stitches, the pain melted away.

“I am happy you are here.”

“I am always here, sometimes you just forget.”

“I will never forget you.”

“I know, my turtle dove, I know.” She returned to soothing him and taking away his stress and fear. “He certainly is a fine choice.”

“What, mum?”

“Robert, he is a good choice for you, better than you know. Don’t forget.”

The room around them slowly melted away and Alan took his mum’s hand and they stood, walking through the casino that had taken over his bedroom.

“Why are we in a casino?”

“Alan, you know why. You are unsure about some things.”

“Mum, don’t walk away, I still need you.”

“I won’t always be here, my turtle dove.” She pulled him onto a hug and kissed the top of his head. “You need to learn how to gamble on your own.”

“How do I do that?”

“Step up and place a bet.”

“I have nothing to bet with.”

“Check your pockets.” She walked away, hearing Alan gasp as he dug out a bundle of cash from his pockets.

“What if I loose it all?”

She turned and looked at him, her eyes shinning and happy. He remembered that smile before she got sick, and he wanted to cry. He missed it so much, his heart ached. Walking toward him, she continued to smile. Finally placing her hand on his shoulder, she looked at him, her eyes growing serious. “Sometimes, my turtle dove, you need to risk losing everything, even lose it in order to win. Are you ready to do that?”

“I love him.”

“I know you do, and somewhere he knows it, too. But he is scared, you need to push him and be willing to lose him, then he will know.”

“Mum, I don’t want to.”

“I know, my precious boy, but you need to remember. Go place a bet. See how you do.”

Alan walked over to the roulette wheel and he looked at the mat. Red and black squares stared back at him, the man at the wheel asking him to make a bet. Alan looked down at the money in his hand, he then noticed each bill didn’t have the queen’s image staring back, but his face, and the denominations were just hearts. “Mum, are you sure? I bet it all?”

“That is not for me to tell you, but to win big they say you must bet big.”

Alan placed his stack of hearts on the red, and nodded to the dealer. He then took a step back and watched.

“We have a bet on Robert, it looks like Alan’s entire heart has been bet.” Alan looked down and the red squares faded away to Robert’s smiling face, then the smile turned to a frown as the ball was sent sailing around the wheel. The ball bounced…Robert, then black, Robert and then black. Finally, it dropped into a black slot and the dealer called out, “Black it is, black is the winner.” He scooped up Alan’s heart and stuffed it down the small slot and it was gone.

“Mum, mum, I lost, I bet on Robert and lost, Mum.” Alan screamed and looked around, the room seemed to dissolve until he was back in his room. “I lost, I lost, why? Why?”

Do you want Robert to be there when Alan wakes up?

Do you want Alan to wake up alone?
