Sweet Dreams are Made of These Alan woke up a few hours later, glancing at the clock and looking around, taking in the room for the last time, a sadness beginning to fill him. He was heading back to London today and leaving Robert, unsure when their next rendezvous could be arranged. Alan reached out his arm and found the warm body buried under the comforter. He spooned around Robert and wrapped his arms around his middle and chest, dropping kisses across his back, tasting the skin. Soon he felt Robert start to stir beneath him and finally Robert brought his hands up to curl around Alan’s arm, rubbing his thumb across his forearm. “Morning, love."
"Mrmgh," was the soft reply mumbled back.
Alan pulled Robert in tighter and rested his cheek on Robert's back, breathing in the sleepy musk that clung to Robert's bare skin. "We need to consider getting up soon."
"A few more minutes?" Robert blinked his eyes and stretched his legs out, then wove them with Alan's and he pushed back tighter against Alan’s chest.
They lay in bed wrapped up together, neither wanting to get up and begin the next leg of the journey that would end with them apart.
Finally, Alan cracked an eye open and saw the time. Alan kissed Robert’s shoulder. “Love, we really need to get going. Come on.”
Robert stretched and turned over onto his back. He reached out an arm to Alan, finally settling it on Alan’s shoulder. He squeezed, then pulled Alan into a heated kiss. Lips pressed together, Robert threaded his hand behind Alan’s head, holding him in place as he worked their lips together, snaking his tongue out. He heard Alan let out a soft moan and melt into the kiss. After a few moments, Robert pulled back to look at Alan, trying to blink him in to as much focus as he could without his glasses. “Alright, now we can get up.”
Alan grabbed a pillow and threw it at Robert as he laughed and climbed out of bed.
**************
Together, Alan and Robert silently took the blankets out of the dryer and folded them. They walked around and dusted and cleaned, putting the small cabin back in order. It only took an hour or so to make sure that all the traces of their mini-break were erased.
Bags packed. Taken outside. After stuffing them into the trunk, Robert leaned up against the side of the car and stared sadly at the cabin.
Alan sidled up next to Robert and leaned against him for comfort and warmth.
“Maybe we can come back some day. It would be gorgeous here in the spring,” Robert said wistfully and wrapped an arm around Alan’s waist, drawing him nearer.
“I’d like that,” Alan replied, resting his head on a shoulder.
Robert sighed and briefly closed his eyes, breathing deeply the smell of the damp woods, fresh air, and Alan next to him. “Are you ready to get going?”
“No.”
Robert gave Alan a squeeze before reluctantly stepping back and settling himself behind the wheel, waiting for his other half to join him.
******************
As they made their way towards the airport, Alan rested his hand on Robert’s thigh, rubbing the denim-covered leg with his thumb. Neither spoke; words were not needed. Music played on the radio, both men catching themselves singing along quietly. Robert covered Alan’s hand with his own and gripped it tightly as the airport came into view.
When the car stopped, Alan removed his hand. He realized his palms were sweating and rubbed them nervously against his thighs. He looked over at Robert, dreading this moment. He just wanted to stay, to cancel all his engagements in London and go home with Robert. He also wanted Robert to finally be ready for a commitment, but he knew he wasn’t. Not yet.
"Have a safe flight." The words awkwardly tripped out of Robert's mouth. He knew he should say something else. He reached his hand out and played with the collar on Alan’s shirt, as he lowered his eyes in thought, then looked up and made eye contact.
Alan paused and looked over his shoulder, making sure that there was no one about before he leaned forward and pressed a quick kiss to Robert's mouth, feeling arms wrap around him, and then kissed his temple and whispered in his ear, "I love you." The words were simple and clear and did not ask for a response.
Robert's hands tightened on Alan's back for a few seconds, but then Alan was pulling away and exiting the car with his luggage. He gave a small smile, then hurried off. Robert watched him go and felt a pull in his chest, like his heart was trying to leave with the curly-haired man. Horns blaring behind him brought him back from the daze.
He drove forward, feeling light-headed. All he knew was the smell of Alan, the way he felt in his arms and his last words, bouncing around his head. He still was in shock as he returned the rental. Robert played with his phone, knowing the moment was lost.
Robert counted the hours until they could talk again and started to hope that they would kill off Wilson so that he could see Alan sooner rather than later.
