Previous story:
Drinking and Dining Robert was lying on his bed, not caring that his shoes were still on, resting on the covers. Just two hours ago he had called up Kat and met with her privately. This was something that he had needed to do face to face. A phone call just wouldn’t cut it. He was originally just going to tell her that he couldn’t see her any more, but then the stricken look that she had given him was begging for more of an explanation.
He hadn’t mention Alan by name or gender, but he did say that he was involved in a secret relationship that the pictures and rumors were straining. Breaking. Broken. Her teary look did soften, and he’d seen her start to reach over for his hand, then stop. She’d told him that she was sorry, in more ways than one, then abruptly scooted her chair backwards and left, head held high and not looking back.
Twin teardrops pulled loose from the corners of his eyes and slid a path downwards, past his temples and pooling just inside the shell of his ear. He ignored them. Pretending that they didn’t exist was so much easier. Remembering the anger as Alan had shouted at him, the words, the betrayal spinning around his head, they seemed to be on some sort of auto-play, repeating and repeating …he had no idea how to press stop and delete it from his mind. Ignore it and all the happiness that he had experienced during the last year and a half?
He closed his eyes and a few more tears join their brothers. He saw Alan smiling on a beach, someplace they had never been, but the image was as clear as the shimmering water behind him. He was smiling, and the sun bounced in his hair, adding a touch of red to its color. Then he was running, running towards the water and Robert felt his heart swell with happiness. He ran towards his boyfriend as he splashed in the water. But then the sky turned black and Alan’s angry words colored the world. Robert reached out to touch him and Alan was gone.
Fuck. He brought his hand up, thumbing away another tear, unable to ignore it any more than he could stop thinking about their past, his present, and what the future may hold for them both. Would he be alone and lonely for the rest of his life? And was Alan feeling the same? Or had he already moved on and left him behind?
